A new humility

How can we change the way we view being human from a radical ecological perspective? What stories help us to better understand the disruptions caused by the climate crisis? These questions are at the heart of PREY. And perhaps our own mortality and vulnerability provide a good starting point for the search for an answer.


PREY will consist of three solos by three generations of women. Each has its own focus: text/language, song/music and dance/performance. With every solo, the tension between the human and the landscape, performer and scenography, becomes more intense and intimate. The essence of PREY is finding solace in the frightening fact that we too are food, that we too belong to an ecological cycle of life and death.

Kris Verdonck has gathered an extraordinary group of people around him for this performance: composer Annelies Van Parys, ICTUS Ensemble, actress Katelijne Damen, singer Anna Clare Hauf and dancer Mooni Van Tichel. Verdonck is responsible for the scenography, a multimedia landscape in which the performers increasingly disappear and are swallowed up.

The premiere is scheduled for 25-26 March 2023 at Théâtre Varia, together with Kaaitheater and as part of the Klarafestival in Brussels.

DEMO is Kris Verdonck's first film.

The starting point for this film project is the performance UNTITLED, a show by Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company that premiered at the Kaaitheater in 2014. DEMO follows the genre of silent film, slapstick, musical and cartoons, as well as the style of the numerous uploads on YouTube and other social media.

DEMO is a social and absurdist portrait of Bee, an artist looking for work. Bee is homeless, lives under a bridge in the Brussels Canal Zone and is dressed as a mascot.  He makes videos of himself with his smartphone and hopes to one day find an audience. Short acts interrupt his existential boredom.

In DEMO, we follow Bee's path and his stunts for several days and nights. Bee lives in a harsh reality and - just because of that - also in his imagination, in his madness and hallucinations. His tricks are aimless and nonsensical, and as the days progress his existence begins to weigh on him. His surroundings - a clash of banks, art institutions, homeless people, refugees, expensive apartments and drug addicts - are indifferent. He is part of the scenery that nevertheless defines him and in which he simultaneously disappears. The enthusiasm with which he tries to entertain becomes increasingly extreme, wry and dangerous, to the point of being suicidal. Suicide is unfortunately not an option, cartoon characters don't die, they rise again and again.

DEMO

To support younger and mid-career artists in developing technical aspects of their work, A Two Dogs Company offers a number of residencies every year. The aim is to combine the development of technical elements (machines, light installations, sound, projection, etc.) with dramaturgical and content related conversations. We provide the material, machines and space needed in the studio and guide where necessary.

Each residency runs for one year. Technical developments cannot easily be limited in time, as in a "regular" residency. A technical element is made and tested, and then the artist usually goes back to the drawing board, changes something, tests again, etc. until finally a prototype emerges. Then another "plug-and-play" version must be made, and so on. By being able to work with technical tests and applications early in the creation process, technology can be more substantively integrated into the performance, installation or choreography.

The residencies are aimed at artists for whom this support represents an opportunity to engage more substantively and efficiently with new media and technology. Every year we launch a call and our 'residency partners' workspacebrussels, KWP - Kunstenwerkplaats, Grand Theatre Groningen and Bâtard festival, also bring in artists.

Een nieuwe nederigheid

Hoe kunnen we de mens vanuit een radicaal ecologisch perspectief anders bekijken? Welke verhalen helpen ons de ontregelingen als gevolg van de klimaatcrisis beter begrijpen? Het zijn deze vragen die aan de basis liggen van PREY. Misschien vormen onze eigen sterfelijkheid en kwetsbaarheid wel een goed vertrekpunt voor de zoektocht naar een antwoord. Misschien moeten we opnieuw leren sterven om onze plek te vinden in het geheel.

PREY zal bestaan uit drie solo’s door drie generaties vrouwen. Elk hebben ze een eigen focus: tekst/taal, zang/muziek en dans/performance. Met elke solo wordt de spanning tussen mens en landschap, performer en scenografie, intenser en intiemer. De essentie van PREY is troost vinden in het schrikwekkende feit dat ook wij voedsel zijn, dat ook wij behoren tot een ecologische cyclus van leven en dood.

Kris Verdonck verzamelde voor deze voorstelling een bijzondere groep mensen rond zich: componiste Annelies Van Parys, ICTUS Ensemble, actrice Katelijne Damen, zangeres Anna Clare Hauf en danseres Mooni Van Tichel. Verdonck staat in voor de scenografie, een multimediaal landschap waarin de performers steeds meer verdwijnen en opgeslokt worden.

De première is gepland op 25-26 maart 2023 in Théâtre Varia, samen met Kaaitheater en in het kader van het Klarafestival in Brussel.

Het startpunt voor dit filmproject is de performance UNTITLED, een voorstelling van Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company die in 2014 in het Kaaitheater in première ging. DEMO volgt het genre van de stille film, slapstick, musical en tekenfilm, evenals de stijl van de talloze uploads op YouTube en andere sociale media.

DEMO is een sociaal en absurdistisch portret van Bee (zoals ‘bij’ in het Engels), een kunstenaar op zoek naar werk. Bee is dakloos, leeft onder een brug in de Brusselse kanaalzone en is gekleed als een mascotte.  Hij maakt met zijn smartphone filmpjes van zichzelf en hoopt ooit een publiek te vinden. Korte acties doorbreken zijn existentiële verveling. Hij weet gewoon niet wat te doen.

In DEMO volgen we gedurende een aantal dagen en nachten het pad van Bee en zijn stunts. Bee leeft in een harde realiteit en – net daardoor - ook in zijn verbeelding, zijn waanzin en hallucinaties. Zijn trucs zijn doelloos en nonsensicaal, en naarmate de dagen vorderen begint zijn bestaan op hem te wegen. Zijn omgeving - een clash van banken, kunstinstellingen, daklozen, vluchtelingen, dure appartementen en drugsverslaafden - is onverschillig. Hij is een deel van het decor dat hem bepaalt en waarin hij tegelijkertijd verdwijnt. Het enthousiasme waarmee hij probeert te entertainen wordt steeds driester, wranger en gevaarlijker, tot op het suïcidale af. Zelfmoord is helaas geen optie. Tekenfilmfiguren sterven niet, ze staan telkens weer op. 

DEMO

Om jongere (podium)kunstenaars te ondersteunen bij het ontwikkelen van technische aspecten van hun werk, biedt A Two Dogs Company jaarlijks een aantal residenties aan. Het doel is om ontwikkeling van technische elementen (machines, lichtinstallaties, klank, projectie, …) te combineren met dramaturgisch-inhoudelijke gesprekken. We stellen het materiaal, de machines en de benodigde ruimte ter beschikking in het atelier en begeleiden waar nodig.

Iedere residentie loopt gedurende één jaar. Technische ontwikkelingen kan je niet makkelijk, zoals bij een ‘gewone’ residentie, in tijd beperken. Een technisch element wordt gemaakt en getest, en dan gaat de kunstenaar meestal terug naar de tekentafel, verandert iets, test opnieuw enz. tot er uiteindelijk een prototype ontstaat. Daarna moet er nog een ‘plug-and-play’ versie gemaakt worden, en zo verder. Door vroeg in het creatieproces al te kunnen werken met technische tests en toepassingen, kan de techniek meer inhoudelijk geïntegreerd worden in de performance, installatie of choreografie.

De residenties zijn gericht op jonge en mid-career kunstenaars voor wie deze ondersteuning een kans betekent om meer inhoudelijk en efficiënt met nieuwe media en technologie om te gaan. Elk jaar lanceren we een oproep en ook onze ‘residentiepartners’ workspacebrussels, KWP - Kunstenwerkplaats, Grand Theatre Groningen en Bâtard festival, brengen kunstenaars aan.

Une nouvelle humilité

Comment pouvons-nous considérer les humain·es différemment dans une perspective écologique radicale ? Quels récits nous aident à mieux appréhender les bouleversements causés par la crise climatique ? Telles sont les interrogations qui sous-tendent PREY. Et notre propre mortalité et vulnérabilité, pourraient constituent un bon point de départ pour la recherche d'une réponse. Peut-être devons-nous réapprendre à mourir pour trouver notre place dans le grand tout. 

PREY se déclinera en trois solos réalisés par trois générations de femmes. Chacune d'elles a son propre centre d'intérêt : texte/langue, chant/musique et danse/performance. À chaque solo, la tension entre l’être humain et le paysage, l'interprète et la scénographie, devient plus intense et intime. L'essence de PREY est de trouver du réconfort dans le fait terrifiant que nous, humain·es, sommes également de la nourriture, que nous aussi appartenons à un cycle écologique de vie et de mort. 
 

Pour ce spectacle, Kris Verdonck a réuni autour de lui un groupe particulier de personnes : la compositrice Annelies Van Parys, l'ensemble ICTUS, l'actrice Katelijne Damen, la chanteuse Anna Clare Hauf et la danseuse Mooni Van Tichel. Verdonck assure la scénographie, un paysage multimédia dans lequel les interprètes disparaissent de plus en plus, et y sont englouties. 
 

La première est prévue le 25-26 mars 2023 au Théâtre Varia en collaboration avec Kaaitheater et dans le cadre du Klarafestival à Bruxelles.

DEMO est le premier film de Kris Verdonck.

Le point de départ de ce projet de film est la performance UNTITLED, un spectacle de Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company qui a été créé au Kaaitheater en 2014. DEMO suit le genre du film muet, du slapstick, de la comédie musicale et du dessin animé, ainsi que le style des innombrables téléchargements sur YouTube et autres médias sociaux.

DEMO est un portrait social et absurde de Bee (comme « bee »-abeille- en anglais), une artiste qui cherche du travail. Bee est sans abri, vit sous un pont dans la zone du canal de Bruxelles et est habillé comme une mascotte. Il réalise des vidéos de lui avec son smartphone et espère un jour trouver un public. Dee brèves actions brisent son ennui existentiel. Il ne sait pas quoi faire.

Dans DEMO, nous suivons le parcours de Bee et ses cascades pendant plusieurs jours et nuits. Bee vit dans une réalité qui est dure et - justement à cause de cela - également dans son imagination, sa folie et ses hallucinations. Ses tours sont dépourvus de but et de sens, et au fil des jours, son existence commence à lui peser. Son environnement - un clash de banques, d'institutions artistiques, de sans-abri, de réfugié·es, d'appartements chers et de toxicomanes - est indifférent. Il fait partie du décor qui le définit et dans lequel il disparaît simultanément. L'enthousiasme avec lequel il essaie de se divertir devient de plus en plus déchaîné, ironique et dangereux, jusqu'à devenir suicidaire. Malheureusement, le suicide n'est pas une option. Les personnages de dessins animés ne meurent pas, ils ressuscitent encore et encore. 

DEMO

Pour aider les jeunes artistes (de scène) à développer les aspects techniques de leur travail, A Two Dogs Company propose chaque année un certain nombre de résidences. L'objectif est de combiner le développement d'éléments techniques (machines, installations lumineuses, son, projection, etc.) avec des discussions sur le contenu dramaturgique. Nous fournissons le matériel, les machines et l'espace nécessaire dans le studio, et proposons une guidance si nécessaire.

Chaque résidence a une durée d'un an. Les développements techniques ne peuvent pas être facilement limités dans le temps, comme lors d'une résidence "normale". Un élément technique est fabriqué et testé, puis l'artiste retourne généralement à sa table de dessin, apporte des modifications, effectue à nouveau des tests, etc. jusqu'à ce qu'un prototype soit finalement créé. Ensuite, une autre version "plug-and-play" doit être réalisée, et ainsi de suite. En étant en mesure de travailler avec des tests et des applications techniques dès le début du processus de création, l’aspect technique peut être intégrée de manière plus substantielle dans le spectacle, l'installation ou la chorégraphie.

Les résidences s'adressent à de jeunes artistes ainsi qu’à des artistes en milieu de carrière pour qui ce soutien représente une opportunité d'appréhender de manière plus substantielle et plus efficace les nouveaux médias et technologies. Chaque année, nous lançons un appel et nos "partenaires de résidence", workspacebrussels, KWP - Kunstenwerkplaats, Grand Theatre Groningen et Bâtard festival, font également venir des artistes.
