DARK is a new performance by Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company about artificial intelligence and artificial presence. In this production Verdonck continues his exploration of the tension between presence and absence, real and fake, human and technology, and all this in times of AI. 

Mustaf Ahmeti and Jeroen Van der Ven are the performers for this piece that consists of three parts: DARK, ACT #2 and BRASS #2.
Live and digital bodies and voices alternate, to the point where they are difficult to distinguish. In the theatre space, DARK examines that other black box: the space behind the computer or smartphone screen and the algorithms and artificial intelligence behind all kinds of social media and chatbots. A performer surrounded by glass panels manipulates the screens, disappears, reappears and seems to want to draw the audience into their space. 

By means of artificial intelligence, ACT #2 continues the work Verdonck and actor Johan Leysen (1950-2023) did on Samuel Beckett. A voice speaks the thirteenth and final part Beckett’s Texts for nothing (1952), alone in the darkness as blankets rise and fall like ghosts moving across the stage. In BRASS #2, music resounds from three sousaphones, but the source of the sounds is indeterminate in this experiment with artificial presence.

What bodies and forms of life are to be found “behind” our screens and apps? And what impact do those screens and digital entities have on our bodies, our senses, our sense of reality? Like the human performers, the objects in this performance have an ambiguous status. Are they controlled by the performers or vice versa, or do they move autonomously? Everything seems interconnected and the spectator too will have to reconsider their point of view in this haunting world in which the concept of reality is called into question.

DARK is een nieuwe voorstelling van Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company over artificiële intelligentie en artificiële aanwezigheid. In deze voorstelling zet Verdonck zijn onderzoek verder naar de spanning tussen aanwezigheid en afwezigheid, echt en fake, mens en technologie, en dat in tijden van AI.

Mustaf Ahmeti en Jeroen Van der Ven zijn de performers in deze performance die bestaat uit drie delen: DARK, ACT #2 en BRASS #2.
Live en digitale lichamen en stemmen wisselen elkaar af, tot op het punt dat ze nog moeilijk van elkaar te onderscheiden zijn. DARK verkent in de theaterruimte die andere black box: de ruimte achter het computer- of smartphone scherm en de algoritmes en artificiële intelligentie achter allerlei sociale media en chatbots. Een performer omringd door glazen panelen manipuleert de schermen, verdwijnt, verschijnt weer en lijkt het publiek mee te willen trekken in hun ruimte. 

Door middel van artificiële intelligentie zet ACT #2 het werk dat Verdonck en acteur Johan Leysen (1950-2023) deden rond Samuel Beckett verder. Het dertiende en laatste deel van Samuel Becketts Texts For Nothing (1952), gesproken door de stem van Johan Leysen, weerklinkt in een ruimte met stapels grijze dekens. In BRASS #2  weerklinkt muziek uit drie sousafoons, maar de bron van de geluiden is onbepaald in dit experiment met artificiële aanwezigheid.

Welke lichamen en levensvormen bevinden zich ‘achter’ onze schermen en apps? En welke impact hebben die schermen en digitale entiteiten op ons lichaam, op onze zintuigen, ons gevoel voor realiteit? Net als de menselijke performers, hebben ook de objecten in deze voorstelling een ambigue status. Worden ze aangestuurd door de performers of omgekeerd, of bewegen ze autonoom? Alles lijkt met elkaar verbonden en ook de toeschouwer zal zich een houding moeten aanmeten in deze spookachtige wereld waarin het begrip ‘werkelijkheid’ op losse schroeven komt te staan.

DARK est le nouveau spectacle de Kris Verdonck / A Two Dogs Company sur l'intelligence artificielle et la présence artificielle. Verdonck poursuit tout au long de cette représentation son enquête sur la tension entre la présence et l'absence, le vrai et le faux, l'humain et la technologie, et ce à l’ère de l'IA. 

Mustaf Ahmeti et Jeroen Van der Ven en sont les performeurs de cette pièce qui se compose de trois parties : DARK, ACT #2 et BRASS #2.
Des corps et des voix réels et numériques alternent, au point qu'il est difficile d'encore les distinguer. Au sein de l'espace théâtral, DARK explore cette autre boîte noire : l'espace derrière l'écran de l'ordinateur ou du smartphone, ainsi que les algorithmes et l'intelligence artificielle qui se cachent derrière toutes sortes de réseaux sociaux et de chatbots. Un performeur entouré de panneaux de verre manipule les écrans, disparaît, réapparaît et semble vouloir attirer le public dans son espace.

Grâce à l'intelligence artificielle, ACT #2 poursuit le travail de Verdonck et du comédien Johan Leysen (1950-2023) sur Samuel Beckett. La treizième et dernière partie de Texts For Nothing (1952) de Samuel Beckett, portée par la voix de Johan Leysen, résonne dans une pièce où s'empilent des couvertures grises. Dans BRASS #2, la musique retentit de trois sousaphones, mais la source des sons est indéterminée dans cette expérience de présence artificielle.

Quels corps et quelles formes de vie évoluent  « derrière » nos écrans et applications ? Et quel est l'impact de ces écrans et de ces entités numériques sur nos corps, nos sens, notre perception de la réalité ? Tout comme les interprètes humains, les objets de cette performance sont eux aussi dotés d'un statut ambigu. Sont-ils contrôlés par les performeurs ou inversement, à moins qu’ils ne se déplacent pas de manière autonome ? Tout semble interconnecté et le public devra lui aussi prendre position dans ce monde fantomatique où la notion même de « réalité » chancelle.
