"In the office of the leadership - where it was and who sat there no one I asked knows or knew - in this office I imagine that all human thoughts and wishes revolve in a circle, and all human aims and fulfillments in a circle going in the opposite direction. But through the window the reflection of the divine worlds fell onto the hands of the leadership as they drew up the plans. [...] Throughout all the different levels of the world the emperor, as emperor, is great. But the living emperor, a human being like us, lies on a peaceful bed, just as we do. It is, no doubt, of ample proportions, but it could be merely narrow and short. [...] The empire is immortal, but the individual emperor falls and collapses. Lorsque s'ouvre le rideau cachant l'installation, trois personnages debout deviennent visibles, une femme et deux hommes. Plus petits que nature, ils chantent des bribes d'airs d'opéra. Ce sont des poupées sur lesquelles sont projetées les images filmées de trois chanteurs d'opéra. La femme porte un tailleur à la Mme Thatcher, l'un des hommes est vêtu d'un costume bien coupé et l'autre d'une tenue blanche ornée d'insignes militaires. Il s'agit visiblement de trois personnages importants. Des solos vocaux tirés d'opéras de Verdi, Wagner, Haendel et Stravinski s'alternent, s'enchaînent imperceptiblement et, pour finir, les trois interprètes chantent ensemble. Les extraits d'œuvres lyriques évoquent la chute ou la fin proche de divers types de souverains (rois, généraux, pharaons, demi-dieux...). Le chant final à l'unisson est une mise en garde contre un désastre proche.
