BEETLE

“He was lying on his hard, as it were armor-plated, back and when he lifted his head a little he could see his domelike brown belly divided into stiff arched segments [...]. However violently he forced himself toward his right side he always rolled onto his back again. He tried it at least a hundred times, shutting his eyes to keep from seeing his struggling legs, and only desisted when he began to feel in his side a faint dull ache he had never felt before. [...] a brown fluid issued from his mouth…”

From: 'The Metamorphoses' by Franz Kafka
BEETLE is a giant, two-hour long nighttime projection displayed on a wall in the centre of a city. The projection is ‘on a loop’ and thus lasts until morning; like a painting only to be seen by a few passers-by. The image shows the metamorphosis from larva to beetle of the Dynastes Hercules, one of the largest and strongest insects in the world. The beetle puts up an heroic struggle to break out of its harness, after which it lands on its feet. Knowing that 2 out of 10 beetles die of exhaustion during this metamorphosis, we can see that this really is a struggle of life and death.

BEETLE is part of the 'circuit installation' K, a Society (2010) but can also be shown on its own.
